Mustelids!

Incase you haven't heard already, our poor chicks that we incubated were put outside because they were stinking up the classroom,  were killed. :(
Our chicks hatching from the incubator
Jonah the first chick hatching.

We have endeavoured on a journey to find out what killed our pets. We have done some research and think that it is probably something from the mustelid family. Our research can be found in the post below. We also discovered that these pests are wreaking havoc to our native bird population and have been doing a lot of reading about pests and our wildlife in class.

Yesterday, Nathan bought in some ink tracks from Gotcha Traps Ltd. We put them out with different baits.
Peanut butter lure
banana and honey lure
ink tunnel
tinfoil attracts stoats
chicken lure

When we checked the tracks this morning we were a bit disappointed with only finding one print. Hopefully we lure more in tonight. Here is the track:
See if you can figure out what left this track with the guide below:

What made these tracks?

Giraffes Can't Dance Masks

Last term for art we learnt how to create a paper mache mask. We were inspired by the book "Giraffes Can't Dance" by Giles Andreae.

We learnt that you need to make at least four or five layers of paper mache with a lot of glue, if you don't work fast and get enough layers on, your balloon might sink and you have to start again.

We then had to choose a character from Giraffes Can't Dance, and make our mask like that animal. Some of the things were hard to design and we had to think very creatively, check out the horns, trunks and noses we made.

Once we were finished with our masterpieces, we reenacted Giraffe Can't Dance as a drama. We had to go and learn the dances from the book and perform for the class and camera.

Finally the editing process is done and here is our version of Giraffes Can't Dance. We hope you enjoy!

Museum Visit

On Monday the 15th Tawhai, Manatu, Kowhai and Kanuka went to the Otago Museum. We learnt about forces and got to make predictions and have discussions about force and the catapult.

We loved playing in discovery world! Getting hands on and finding stuff out is a fantastic way for us to learn. We loved the marble run. It gave us some fantastic ideas to create our own.

The giant Moa:

A tarantula!

We found a giant turtle shell. We have been writing explanations about the turtle life cycle.
And we found a gorilla! Our class novel is "The One and Only Ivan" a story about a gorilla in a circus. This is not like the Silverback Gorilla that is in our book though.

We finally went around the museum on a scavenger hunt to find clues. This was so much fun! We went right through the museum and had to really figure out the clues and find the answers inside exhibitions.

The final question was we had to answer with all of our clues was:
How did the Moai from Easter Island get to where they stand?

Only some of us figured it out....

Do you know?

Rural Women's Competiton

We have been very busy writing persuasions for the HP Rural Women's Technology Grant. We wrote them into a google doc, and could read and comment on each others work for peer editing. We have been working on giving constructive, specific criticism to help our classmates.
You can read our draft here, and leave us a comment too.
It is good for us to have comments so that we can see where we need to fix up our work.

We recorded our persuasions and videoed dramas to send through to the Rural Women. Hopefully we win! The first prize is $10,000 to spend on technology.

Wish us luck.

Welcome Back to Term 2. ANZAC - what does it mean to you?

Welcome back! We have had a busy couple of days back, getting back into school routines and starting up new programmes such as KOS with Constable Gordon. We have also been looking at ANZAC day. Today we reflected on what ANZAC day means to us, read a picture book called "Jim's Letters" based on real letters sent between two brothers from Ranfurly during WW1.

We wrote some poems collaboratively on our Google Classroom. We hope to share them on Friday, and Saturday at the memorial.

Don't forget to check out our brand new learning journey blogs.

What does ANZAC Day mean to you?
